One of my best friends is 20 years older than me, but youโ€™d never guess it if you saw us together.

Whether weโ€™re swapping jokes or diving into a shared hobby, the number of years heโ€™s been on this earth doesnโ€™t seem to matter at all. What truly counts is his attitude and zest for lifeโ€”it matches mine perfectly, and thatโ€™s what makes our friendship work. From spending time with him, Iโ€™ve learned something important: how you think and what you do have a huge impact on how others perceive your age.

Itโ€™s not just about looking young; itโ€™s about feeling young and living with a youthful outlook. Thatโ€™s the kind of person I want to be well into my 70s and beyond. If you feel the same, here are some strategies to help keep your spirit as fresh and vibrant as ever.

Surround Yourself With Younger Energy

Spend time with younger peopleโ€”their energy, and humor are contagious. Whether itโ€™s playing games with your grandchildren, mentoring a young professional, or joining a group that brings together people of all ages, immersing yourself in their world can rekindle your own youthful enthusiasm. You might find yourself laughing more or viewing life through a more optimistic lens, all thanks to their influence.

Cultivate a Passion for Learning

A curious mind is a youthful mind. When you engage with something new, you activate parts of your brain that keep you sharp and alert. Take up a hobby like painting, learn a new language, or even delve into a topic that fascinates you. Not only does this improve your mental acuity, but it also gives you a sense of accomplishment and progress. And remember, itโ€™s not about becoming an expertโ€”itโ€™s about the joy of discovering something new.

Get Moving Every Day

Physical activity isnโ€™t just about staying fit; itโ€™s about maintaining a sense of vitality. Daily movement, whether itโ€™s a brisk walk in the park, a yoga session, or even dancing around your kitchen, keeps your body strong and your spirits high. Exercise also boosts endorphins, helping you feel more energetic and positive. If you choose activities you genuinely enjoy, it wonโ€™t feel like a chore but a celebration of what your body can do.

Laugh Often and Loudly

Laughter truly is the best medicineโ€”and one of the easiest ways to feel youthful. A hearty laugh reduces stress, strengthens your immune system, and even gives your body a mini workout. Spend time with people who make you laugh, watch your favorite comedies, or recall funny memories. The ability to laugh at yourself and lifeโ€™s absurdities keeps your perspective light and your heart playful.

Maintain a Sense of Adventure

Injecting a bit of unpredictability into your routine can make life feel like an adventure again. This doesnโ€™t mean scaling mountains or diving with sharksโ€”though if thatโ€™s your thing, go for it. It can be as simple as trying a new restaurant, taking a different route on your walk, or tackling an activity youโ€™ve never done before. The thrill of novelty stimulates your brain and keeps monotony at bay, giving you the same butterflies you felt as a kid trying something new.

Build Connections That Spark Joy

Strong, positive relationships are a cornerstone of feeling young at heart. Make time for meaningful conversations, whether with old friends, new acquaintances, or family members. Join a community group, attend social events, or even start a book club. Being surrounded by people who bring out the best in you fosters feelings of belonging and contentment. These connections remind you that life is richer and more rewarding when shared.

Focus on Gratitude Every Day

Gratitude is a powerful antidote to negativity. When you actively acknowledge the good things in your life, you shift your focus from whatโ€™s missing to whatโ€™s abundant. Each day, write down a few things youโ€™re thankful for, whether itโ€™s a sunny day, a kind word from a friend, or even a warm cup of coffee. Over time, this practice trains your mind to notice and appreciate the beauty in your everyday experiences.

Stay In Tune With Your Inner Child

What brought you joy as a child? Revisiting those activities can unlock a sense of wonder and creativity. Build a puzzle, fly a kite, or simply spend time outdoors collecting leaves or stones. Indulge in moments of play, whether itโ€™s with kids or on your own. When you let go of adult expectations and allow yourself to be silly, you tap into a pure kind of happiness thatโ€™s ageless.

Practice Agency Every Day

One of the most empowering ways to feel young is to take control of your choices. Exercising agency means taking ownership of your actions, decisions, and outlook. It could be as simple as saying no to something that drains you or prioritizing something that excites you. By actively steering your life in directions that matter to you, you reaffirm your ability to shape your experiences. This sense of empowerment keeps you energized and connected to your purpose.

Embrace Change With Open Arms

The ability to adapt is a hallmark of youthful thinking. Life is full of twists and turns, and the more you learn to flow with them, the more resilient and optimistic you become. Rather than resisting change, try to see it as an opportunity for growth and discovery. Whether itโ€™s learning a new technology, adjusting to a new life phase, or exploring a fresh perspective, embracing change keeps your mindset flexible and forward-looking.
