I’m a sucker for a good mantra.
Thereโs something about the way a few simple words can shift your mindset, almost like flipping a switch. For me, it comes down to this: what we think has a huge impact on how we feel and, ultimately, the actions we take. Almost everything in life flows downstream from that inner monologue running through your mind.
And hereโs the thing: most of the time, that monologue isnโt your wisest self speaking. Itโs your nervous instincts taking the wheelโimpulsive, scared, and keeping you trapped in cycles of anxiety. But you donโt need a degree in psychology to rewrite the script. Sometimes, all it takes is the right words, simple and soothing, to slow your mind and bring you back to the present.
Here are a few mantras to try outโtheyโve helped me, and I hope theyโll help you too.
“Youโre doing better than you think you are”
When anxiety strikes, it often drags along a cruel inner critic that whispers youโre not good enough. This mantra is a gentle rebuttal to that voice. Think about the challenges youโve faced recentlyโbig or smallโand recognize that even making it through tough days is a victory. Youโve likely handled moments of doubt and fear, yet youโve kept going. This phrase helps you zoom out from your harsh self-assessment and see yourself with more compassion. Youโre likely doing much better than youโre giving yourself credit for.
“Nothing is permanent”
In the middle of an anxious moment, it can feel like the discomfort will last forever. This mantra is a powerful reminder that life is always in flux. Feelings rise and fall, situations evolve, and even the most intense worry eventually dissipates. Say this phrase when youโre overwhelmed, and let it serve as a mental lifeboat. It doesnโt minimize your feelings; it simply offers perspective. When you know the storm is temporary, itโs easier to hold on and ride it out.
“Just this one breath”
Anxiety often pulls us into a whirlwind of โwhat ifsโ and hypothetical catastrophes. This mantra anchors you to the present by focusing on the simplest and most essential action: breathing. Repeat it silently as you inhale deeply and exhale fully. When your mind tries to wander, bring it back to the rhythm of your breath. Over time, this practice not only calms your body but trains your mind to let go of spiraling thoughts. Remember, in anxious moments, just one calm breath can be a victory.
“Itโs okay to feel this way”
How often do we fight against our anxiety, judging ourselves for feeling it in the first place? This mantra is a permission slip to be human. Anxiety is uncomfortable, but resisting it only amplifies the struggle. By repeating this phrase, you create space for acceptance, which can lessen the intensity of your emotions. When you stop labeling anxiety as โbadโ or โwrong,โ it becomes easier to sit with it, knowing itโs a natural part of being alive.
“My worth isnโt tied to this outcome”
Anxiety loves to tell us that our value hinges on external achievementsโgetting the job, meeting the deadline, or being perfect in every interaction. This mantra challenges that narrative. Your worth is inherent, not conditional. Whether you succeed or stumble, youโre still worthy of love, respect, and happiness. Repeating this phrase can help you detach from the outcomes that anxiety clings to and focus instead on showing up as your authentic self.
“I have handled this before”
When anxiety convinces you that youโre incapable of coping, this mantra acts as a reminder of your resilience. Think back to other moments when you felt overwhelmed. Chances are, you navigated those situationsโmaybe not perfectly, but you made it through. This phrase draws strength from your past experiences, reminding you that youโre more capable than you feel in the moment. Trust in your ability to handle whatโs ahead, just as you have in the past.
“I am safe in this moment”
Anxiety often thrives on fear of the unknown, convincing us that danger is around every corner. This mantra brings you back to reality: right here, right now, you are safe. Take a look around you. Feel the ground under your feet, the steady rhythm of your heartbeat, and the air filling your lungs. Grounding yourself in the present can help diffuse the fear of what might happen. Even if the future feels uncertain, this moment is your refuge. Trust in it.
When youโre armed with these mantras, youโre better equipped to face anxiety with compassion and calm. Let them become your go-to tools for reclaiming peace in your mind. Practice them regularly, and watch how they gently reshape your inner world.
