One of my biggest critiques of modern healthcare is that almost no time is spent on the countless, powerful benefits of what nature already offers us.
I understand whyโthereโs money in prescriptions, treatments, and services, so naturally, the system rewards those. But just think: couldnโt some of the taxpayer dollars that subsidize these systems be invested in something as simple as a public campaign promoting the beauty of the basics? Sunshine on your skin, clean air in your lungs, pure water to hydrateโthese things fuel us in ways nothing else can.
Now, Iโm not suggesting thereโs some conspiracy behind this, just people working within the incentives theyโre given.
But we donโt have to wait around for the system to change. I say we start by changing our own lives. Instead of weird diets, complicated regimens, or the latest trend, letโs focus on the elements of health that we encounter every single day. Because the real foundations of wellness arenโt hidden away; theyโre as accessible as the air we breathe.
Start Your Day with Sunlight Soaking
Exposure to sunlight, especially in the morning, triggers your body to produce serotonin, the โfeel-goodโ hormone that enhances mood and focus. Natural sunlight also syncs your circadian rhythm, helping regulate your sleep-wake cycle and promoting restful nights. So, instead of staying indoors, start your day with a few minutes outside, even if itโs just on your porch with a cup of coffee.
Create Spaces with Natural Light for Lasting Energy
Sunlight doesnโt just work wonders outdoors; indoor light exposure affects your health too. Designing spaces to allow natural light inโeven rearranging your home or workspace to include more windows or mirrorsโcan improve productivity and reduce fatigue. Natural light in indoor spaces lowers levels of stress and anxiety, acting as a โbatteryโ that charges your energy and brightens your day.
Embrace โEarthingโ for Grounded Health
โEarthing,โ or grounding, is the practice of walking barefoot on natural surfaces. Grass, sand, or soil may help balance your bodyโs electrical charge and reduces inflammation. Sunlight and grounding together may enhance antioxidant defenses, combat stress, and improve circulation. Next time youโre outdoors, slip off your shoes for a few minutes to reconnect with the earth and enjoy the health boost. At the very least, the time outside will be one of calming and stress-relief.
Seek Out Clean, Natural Air for Respiratory Health
Good air quality is as crucial as the air itself. Seek areas where air is fresh and free from pollutantsโparks, beaches, mountains. These locations have negative ions that boost mood and increase oxygen flow to your brain, leading to clearer thinking and a lifted mood. A weekly walk or hike somewhere with clean air can do wonders for respiratory health, energy, and immunity.
Keep Indoor Air Pure for Better Sleep and Focus
Indoor air can be up to five times more polluted than outdoor air. You can fight this with simple fixes like adding plants that filter toxins, investing in air purifiers, and opening windows to allow circulation. Cleaner air improves sleep, focus, and reduces stress levels, creating a home environment that nurtures your health.
Choose Active Moments Outside for Better Lung Capacity
Exercising outdoors not only gives you a shot of clean air but also builds lung capacity. Activities like brisk walking, jogging, or even gardening in fresh air require your lungs to work harder, strengthening your respiratory muscles. Regular outdoor activity in clean air supports cardiovascular health, boosts stamina, and enhances mental clarity.
Prioritize Pure, Natural Water for Cellular Health
Water is fundamental to every process in our bodies, from digestion to temperature regulation. Choosing the purest water possible, whether from filtered systems or natural springs, ensures youโre giving your cells the hydration they need without unwanted additives. Drinking enough pure water each day is like oiling the machinery of your body, keeping everything functioning smoothly.
Infuse Your Water Routine with Electrolytes and Minerals
While pure water is the goal, you may also want to include natural electrolytes to support hydration. Small amounts of pink Himalayan salt or fresh lemon can add a spectrum of minerals to your water, enhancing hydration and electrolyte balance. This supports your bodyโs energy levels, muscle function, and even cognitive clarity throughout the day.
Use Water for Healing and Recovery
Water isnโt just for drinkingโitโs also a therapeutic tool. Warm baths, cool showers, or hydrotherapy sessions can soothe sore muscles, lower inflammation, and encourage relaxation. Cold water therapy, like a quick cold shower, may even boost circulation and improve mood. A simple water ritual, like soaking in warm water, can be as rejuvenating as a day at the spa.
Make Natureโs Basics Part of Your Wellness Routine
Sunlight, clean air, and pure water are abundant, accessible, and have supported human health for centuries. Incorporate these elements into your daily habits, like morning sunlight exposure, conscious hydration, and time spent in clean air. With nature as your foundation, youโre more likely to achieve a balanced, thriving state of health.
