I think a lot of people get bored with life because they stop living with their eyes open to the magic thatโs possible. Living with four young kids in my house has reminded me just how alive the world can feel when you see it through their growing minds. Trips are adventures, surprises are revelations, and excitement is joyful anticipation.
Iโve made it one of my lifeโs missions not to lose that child-like spirit. Iโve always admired adults who manage to keep that spark of magic alive, and I want to be that kind of inspiration for the next generation.
But how do you find the magic again? Thereโs no formula, and itโs going to look a little different for everyone. The ideas in this list are just ways to get that mojo flowing again. The best inspiration will come when you truly open yourself up to the world and all the wonder it still has to offer.
1. Revisit childhood favorites
Think back to the books, movies, or activities that filled you with awe when you were younger. Was there a fairy tale you couldnโt get enough of? A movie that made you believe anything was possible? Or maybe a game that transported you to an imaginary world? Revisiting these childhood favorites can instantly reconnect you to feelings of excitement and wonder. Watch your favorite animated films, build a pillow fort, or spend an afternoon coloring. You could even dig out an old board game or Lego set and let your inner child play. Nostalgia has a powerful way of reigniting joy and creativity, and it reminds us that magic was always thereโwe just need to tap back into it.
2. Start a gratitude journal
Magic often hides in plain sight, and keeping a gratitude journal can help you uncover it. Itโs easy to overlook the simple joys of life when youโre busy or stressed, but taking a moment to appreciate them can change everything. Each day, write down three things youโre grateful for. They donโt have to be bigโmaybe itโs the smell of your morning coffee, the way sunlight streams through your window, or a kind word from a friend. Over time, youโll train your brain to notice more beauty and wonder in the world around you. Youโll realize that magic isnโt something you need to chase; itโs something you can create simply by paying attention.
3. Watch the sunrise or sunset
Few things feel as magical as watching the sky change colors during sunrise or sunset. Itโs a quiet reminder that the world is full of beauty if we just take the time to notice it. Set aside a morning to wake up early, wrap yourself in a blanket, and watch the sun rise while sipping a warm drink. Or, head outside in the evening and watch the sun dip below the horizon. Find a scenic spot if you canโa beach, a hill, or even your backyard. Without distractions, let yourself fully take in the colors, the stillness, and the sense of peace that comes with it. This simple ritual can shift your perspective and create a sense of awe that stays with you long after the moment has passed.
4. Learn something new
Magic often comes from curiosity and discovery. Think back to when you learned something for the first timeโhow thrilling it felt to uncover new knowledge or master a new skill. You can recreate that feeling by exploring something unfamiliar. Take a dance class, learn to paint, or start playing an instrument. Dive into a topic that fascinates you, whether itโs astronomy, mythology, or cooking a new cuisine. Learning something new keeps life exciting and helps you see the world with fresh eyes. Plus, the process itself is magicalโthe โahaโ moments, the small victories, and the sense of growth as you keep pushing yourself to try more.
5. Spend time in nature
Nature has its own kind of magicโone thatโs easy to forget in the middle of busy schedules and crowded cities. Spend an afternoon hiking in the woods, sit by a lake, or wander through a botanical garden. Notice the intricate patterns in leaves, the songs of birds, or the way sunlight filters through the trees. Feel the wind on your skin or dip your toes in the water. Even small encounters with nature, like tending to houseplants or stargazing, can remind you of the beauty and mystery of the world. Nature has a way of slowing us down and grounding us in the present moment, which is often where magic is easiest to find.
6. Plan a surprise for someone
Surprises, big or small, have a magical qualityโboth for the giver and the receiver. When was the last time you delighted someone with an unexpected act of kindness? It doesnโt have to be elaborate. Bake cookies for a neighbor, send a handwritten letter, or organize a surprise date night for your partner. You could even leave a thoughtful note or small gift for a coworker. Seeing someoneโs face light up because of your thoughtfulness creates a ripple effect of joy. Plus, thereโs something magical about stepping outside your routine to make someone elseโs day specialโitโs a reminder that magic often comes from connection.
7. Practice mindfulness or meditation
Magic often lies in the present moment, but we miss it when our minds are racing. Thatโs where mindfulness and meditation come in. By slowing down and paying attention to your thoughts, surroundings, and feelings, you open yourself up to a deeper sense of wonder. Spend a few minutes each day focusing on your breath, listening to calming music, or simply sitting quietly. Notice the sensations around youโthe sound of rain, the scent of a candle, or the feeling of your heartbeat. Mindfulness isnโt about escaping reality; itโs about noticing the magic thatโs already there. Even a brief pause can help you feel more connected and grounded.
8. Add twinkle lights or candles to your space
Lighting has a way of transforming any space into something magical. Think about how warm and inviting a room feels when itโs lit by candles or soft string lights. Adding these small touches to your home can create an atmosphere that feels cozy, enchanted, and peaceful. Hang twinkle lights in your bedroom, light a few candles during dinner, or use fairy lights to brighten up a reading nook. If you want to go a step further, you could add crystals, plants, or dreamcatchers to create an even more whimsical vibe. The glow of warm lights makes ordinary momentsโlike sipping tea or reading a bookโfeel like rituals, and rituals often feel magical.
9. Celebrate small wins
Why wait for big milestones to celebrate? Too often, we focus only on major achievements and overlook the smaller moments that make up most of our lives. But what if you celebrated completing a project, surviving a tough week, or simply making it through a busy day? Treat yourself to flowers, have a mini dance party in your living room, or make a toast with your favorite drink. Celebrating small wins brings a sense of festivity to everyday life. It reminds you that progress is worth acknowledging, and joy doesnโt have to be saved for special occasions.
10. Create a new tradition
Traditions arenโt just for holidaysโthey can add rhythm and meaning to life any time of year. Start your own, whether itโs Sunday morning pancakes, weekly board game nights, or an annual โfirst day of summerโ picnic. Traditions create something to look forward to, which can make ordinary moments feel extraordinary. They also help you slow down, connect with loved ones, and savor the passage of time instead of rushing through it. Whether itโs lighting candles every Friday night or watching a favorite movie every December, rituals turn simple acts into something sacred.
