We all know the feeling. Youโre tired, discouraged, and ready to throw in the towel. Maybe itโs a goal youโve been chipping away at for years, or maybe itโs a new challenge that feels insurmountable. Whatever it is, the urge to quit is real. But before you do, try these strategies to keep you moving forward, even when it feels like every fiber of your being is telling you to walk away.
1. Lower Your Expectations.
We often walk into situations with a mental blueprint of how thingsย shouldย go. But life doesnโt care about your expectations, and things rarely go exactly as planned. Sometimes, the best way to stick with it is to loosen your grip on perfection. Allow things to be messy and imperfectโsometimes thatโs all you need to keep going.
2. Just Focus on the Next Step.
When youโre in the thick of it, looking at the finish line can make the journey feel impossible. So stop looking there. Instead, put your energy into the next small, doable step. Maybe itโs just sending one email, or picking up a pen and writing one sentence. Small wins build momentum, and theyโre much more manageable than tackling everything at once.
3. Remember Why You Started.
Chances are, you had a good reason to start this journey in the first place. Take a minute to think about what that reason was. Are you doing this for your family, your future self, or maybe for a cause that matters to you? Reconnect with that original spark. Itโs the difference between dragging yourself along and moving with purpose.
4. Find Someone to Hold You Accountable.
Letโs face itโsometimes we need a push. Whether itโs a friend, a coach, or even a supportive online community, having someone else in your corner can make a huge difference. When youโre tempted to quit, theyโll remind you of your commitment, and keep you moving even on your worst days.
5. Take a BreakโNot a Bailout.
Sometimes what you need isnโt an exit, but a pause. A breather. Step back, take a weekend off, or even just go for a walk. When you return, youโll have fresh energy and perspective. A break isnโt quitting; itโs refueling.
6. Reframe Your Struggle as a Growth Opportunity.
Instead of seeing this rough patch as a sign of failure, view it as a challenge meant to build you up. Each hurdle you overcome makes you stronger and wiser. Struggles arenโt just something to get throughโtheyโre what make you better.
7. Visualize the Future You.
Picture yourself at the finish line, looking back at this moment. How grateful will you be that you didnโt give up? Imagine all the good that will come out of sticking with it. Visualization may seem simple, but mentally placing yourself in the future can strengthen your resolve right now.
8. Do It Badly, If Thatโs What It Takes.
Perfectionism is a powerful enemy. Sometimes, the best strategy is to just allow yourself to do it badly. If you have to write a terrible first draft, create a messy prototype, or submit an imperfect report, do it. The alternative is quitting, and doing it badly beats not doing it at all.
9. Celebrate Every WinโNo Matter How Small.
Progress is progress, and each small win deserves to be recognized. It doesnโt have to be a grand gestureโa high-five, a small treat, or even just taking a moment to recognize the win can make a difference. These moments add up and remind you that, bit by bit, youโre moving forward.
10. Break Free from Comparisons.
Itโs easy to look around and see people who seem to be handling things better, achieving more, or breezing through challenges that are crushing you. But remember, youโre not them, and theyโre not you. Comparing yourself to others only amplifies your struggles. Your journey is yours alone, and no one else can dictate how it should look.
11. Remember That Quitting Is a Skill.
Quitting isnโt always bad; there are times when letting go is the right choice. But quitting is a skill that must be honed. Ask yourself if youโre quitting because itโs truly whatโs best, or if youโre quitting because youโre uncomfortable. Learn to recognize the difference. Real quitting is strategic, not reactionary.
12. Recommit to Your Goal Daily.
Every morning, remind yourself why youโre doing this. Make it a daily practice to reconnect with your purpose and goals. This habit creates resilience, so that when the inevitable obstacles come up, youโre already mentally grounded in your purpose.
13. Think of It as an Adventure.
When youโre deep in the grind, itโs easy to lose sight of the adventure in it all. But what if you saw this as a grand, sometimes gritty story unfolding, with you as the hero? Suddenly, those hard days feel like plot twists, and the urge to quit is just another challenge in the story of your success. Keep goingโthis is just one chapter.
