Quiet Pleasures That Don’t Cost a Dime

When we think of pleasure, our minds usually jump to nightlife, travel, and entertainment—experiences that are exciting, sensory, and of course, expensive.

Most people spend the majority of their lives working, and that work is done so they can unlock these more interesting parts of life. That’s why the general assumption is that the more money you have, the more you can spend, and the more pleasure you’ll enjoy.

While there is a kernel of truth to this, I think it misses the bigger picture. I’ve realized that many of the deepest satisfactions in life are quiet pleasures that don’t cost a dime.

Simple pleasures are the kind that are easy to overlook. They are slow to enjoy, don’t grab your attention, and might take a little reflection to notice. But in the end, they provide joys and memories that are gentle on your soul, and best of all—they don’t cost anything.

In the rest of this article, I’ll outline a few specific examples of free pleasures you can start enjoying today.

A Good Night’s Sleep

Few things in life feel as good as getting a truly restful night of sleep. The combination of feeling fresh, alert, and full of energy is hard to beat. If you prioritize sleep and protect those eight hours, you can start to enjoy this wonderful gift every single day.

Upgrading Your Favorite Room

You don’t have to spend a dime to make a room in your house more enjoyable. In fact, most of the time I don’t spend money to make my spaces more aesthetically pleasing. I simply clean up, declutter, and reset the look and feel. I enjoy rotating through our main living spaces, slowly applying this process to every room.

A Long Walk

I consider walking to be one of life’s greatest activities. It’s enjoyable in its own right, and can be done solo or with a friend. It can be combined with other great activities like listening to music or a podcast. And it’s good for your physical and mental health. It’s really hard to beat a long walk, in my book—especially with such a low barrier to action.

Talking with a Friend

Humans were made for relationship and so it’s no surprise that fellowshipping with others is one of the highest pleasures we can attain. We’re all different in our levels of extroversion, but this doesn’t seem to matter. What’s important is that we have healthy connection with other people in our lives.

Helping Other People

As a parent of four children, I can attest that serving others is hard, especially when you do it constantly. It’s a muscle you have to build, and sometimes at the end of the day, my service has run dry. But interestingly, this is one of those areas where the more you give, the easier it gets and the more you receive back. There are few things in life as fulfilling as helping others, and that’s why I consider it a quiet pleasure.

A Good Running Streak

Another counterintuitive pleasure that doesn’t hit you over the head with pleasure, but is intensely satisfying, is a long streak of some good habit. Whether it’s reading, writing, running, sleeping well, eating healthy, or hanging out with friends, there is something deeply fulfilling about racking up one success after another.

Playing With Children

There are countless ways to have fun without spending a dime, but one of the most enjoyable, in my opinion, is spending time with children. They remind you of the freedom and joy of being a child yourself, and for a while you can escape the responsibilities of adulthood and enjoy their world. I’ve sometimes found myself at the end of a day, leaving the dinner table and simply rolling in the grass with my kids.

Being on the Same Page With Your Spouse

There’s a quiet joy that comes when you and your spouse are heading in the right direction together. You’re on the same page spiritually, emotionally, financially, and relationally. You’re both working towards a similar future and carrying a mutually beneficial, positive vibe in your home. For me, I treasure these times as they don’t always feel as easy as they look. But when I’m feeling close to my wife, it’s hard to be in a bad mood, no matter what’s going on.

Getting Lost in a Book

There are some pleasures in life that we really look forward to—really depend on as a source of enjoyment and pleasure in life. For me, one of these is reading a good book. There’s the initial excitement and anticipation of starting a new book, or the pleasure of returning to a long, epic book that you’ve been leisurely reading for months. Either way, I can’t recommend highly enough the joy of becoming a reader.

The Satisfaction of a Clean Home

I’m a relatively frugal guy. I don’t mind spending money on things I value, but I don’t appreciate waste. One thing I occasionally do splurge on is an occasional professional house cleaning. While a clean home is a quiet pleasure in itself, a professionally cleaned home is like a whole new level of satisfaction. It’s amazing how much you can grow to appreciate a service like this to the point where enjoying a clean home becomes one of your favorite experiences in life.

Listening to a Happy Song

One of the many joys of modern life is the ability to listen to any song you want, pretty much anywhere you go. I remember back in college when I would drive for hours on end, tuning into radio stations as I passed through the state and hearing new songs I’d like, only to forget them later. I love being able to find a song and download it instantly on my phone, and then return to it later when I’m in the mood for a happy song.

Working Through Negative Emotions

Not all of life is positive emotions and fun times. But as the book of Ecclesiastes reminds us, there is a time for every season under the sun. In our world of individualism, we are often resisting anything that slows us down or goes against the grain of what we want. But I find a quiet satisfaction in bearing with hard times and working through different emotions. I think they make me a stronger and more well-rounded person, and I wouldn’t trade those experiences.
