Iโ€™ll be the first to admit itโ€”Iโ€™m not great at multitasking.

And honestly, most people arenโ€™t, even if they think they are. Iโ€™ve watched enough multitaskers struggle to keep up to realize how much it pulls attention away from doing anything well. Sure, there are a few situations where multitasking works, like when youโ€™re doing something so mindless that adding a second task doesnโ€™t hurt. But those moments are rare.

The truth is, there are plenty of situations where multitasking isnโ€™t just inefficientโ€”itโ€™s downright harmful.

Thatโ€™s where single-tasking comes in. This list is a reflection of areas in my own life where Iโ€™ve realized that focus and presence matter most. These are 8 key areas where Iโ€™d challenge anyoneโ€”including myselfโ€”to adopt a single-tasking rule. The potential for growth, connection, and peace is too big to ignore.

Put Your Phone Away During Meals

Weโ€™ve all been guilty of sneaking glances at our phones during meals. But this habit divides your attention and steals the joy of being fully present. By committing to keeping your phone out of sight, youโ€™ll rediscover the pleasure of uninterrupted meals. Your food will taste better when savored slowly, and your relationships will deepen through genuine connection. Meals are naturally social and sensory experiencesโ€”embrace them fully by dedicating your focus to the people and plates in front of you.

Focus Entirely on Listening in Conversations

How often do you catch yourself formulating a response while someone is still speaking? Itโ€™s a natural reflex, but it comes at the cost of meaningful connection. Make a habit of turning your full attention to the other person. Look them in the eyes, notice their tone of voice, and listen to understandโ€”not just to reply. Youโ€™ll be amazed at how much more impactful your conversations become when you give the gift of undivided attention.

Reserve Work Time for Deep Focus

In todayโ€™s world of open offices and constant notifications, staying focused feels almost impossible. Thatโ€™s why single-tasking is such a superpower. Create blocks of time in your schedule dedicated to deep workโ€”no email, no Slack, no interruptions. Choose one task and pour all your energy into it. Not only will you finish faster, but the quality of your work will skyrocket. Over time, this habit will transform how you approach your professional life, leading to more confidence and less stress.

Commit to One Hobby at a Time

Many of us try to juggle too many hobbies, dabbling in one activity before jumping to the next. But spreading yourself thin prevents you from masteringโ€”or truly enjoyingโ€”any of them. Instead, pick one hobby to focus on for a season. Whether itโ€™s painting, cooking, or learning a language, give it your full attention. How often do you mentally check out while doing chores? Itโ€™s easy to see these small, repetitive tasks as dull, but theyโ€™re actually perfect opportunities to practice mindfulness. Next time youโ€™re folding laundry or brushing your teeth, slow down and focus entirely on the task. Feel the textures, notice the sounds, and appreciate the rhythm of the activity. These moments might seem small, but theyโ€™re a chance to bring more peace and presence into your day.

Drive Without Distractions

Multitasking while driving is not only dangerous but also robs you of a chance to unwind and reflect. Turn your car into a distraction-free zone. Keep your phone out of reach, choose calming music, or even drive in silence to enjoy the journey. Single-tasking while driving isnโ€™t just about safetyโ€”itโ€™s about transforming your commute into a moment of clarity in an otherwise chaotic day.

Dedicate Specific Times for Social Media

Social media can easily eat up hours of your day, especially when you scroll mindlessly while doing other things. Instead of falling into this trap, designate specific times to engage with your favorite platforms. When youโ€™re on social media, be fully presentโ€”comment thoughtfully, like intentionally, and enjoy the content youโ€™re consuming. Then, log off. This approach prevents overuse and frees up time for more meaningful activities.

Approach Exercise with Full Presence

When youโ€™re working out, how often do you check your phone between sets or let your mind wander? This habit keeps you from getting the most out of your workout. Instead, treat exercise as a time to focus on your body and breath. Pay attention to your form, the sensations in your muscles, and the rhythm of your movements. Not only will this improve your results, but it will also make your workouts feel more rewarding and meditative.

Plan Your Day with Intentional Focus

A scattered day leads to scattered results. Instead of bouncing between tasks, start your day by planning dedicated blocks of time for single-tasking. Assign each task a specific time slot and give it your undivided attention. Whether itโ€™s work, chores, or leisure, this intentional structure helps you get more done without feeling frazzled. The best part? Youโ€™ll end your day with a sense of clarity and accomplishment.
