You really don’t need a whole lot to start decluttering your home, but if you want it to go well and not be as frustrating, I’ve found there are a handful of supplies that are really essential to have on hand. Over the years, Iโ€™ve done my fair share of declutteringโ€”sometimes in short bursts when I couldnโ€™t take the mess anymore and other times as a more intentional effort to simplify my home. Through all of it, Iโ€™ve realized that having the right tools makes the process so much smoother. When youโ€™re constantly running around looking for a trash bag or a marker to label things, it just slows you down and makes decluttering feel like more of a hassle than it needs to be.

I used to think I needed fancy storage solutions or elaborate organizing systems, but honestly, the best decluttering tools are simple, effective, and easy to use. If you have these essentials ready to go, youโ€™ll find it so much easier to stay focused and make real progress. So, before you dive into your next decluttering session, here are the seven must-have supplies that will actually help you get the job done.

1. Sturdy trash bags

It might seem simple, but a good set of trash bags is the backbone of any decluttering session. Whether youโ€™re getting rid of actual garbage, tossing broken items, or packing up things to donate, you need strong bags that wonโ€™t rip under pressure. Opt for heavy-duty bags, especially if youโ€™re dealing with heavier items like old clothes, papers, or small appliances. Thin or flimsy bags can easily tear, leaving you with an even bigger mess to clean up. I like to keep a roll of extra-strong bags in a few different places around my homeโ€”under the sink, in the garage, and even in my carโ€”so Iโ€™m always ready to declutter when the mood strikes.

2. Clear storage bins

Once youโ€™ve sorted through your belongings, youโ€™ll need a way to store the things youโ€™re keeping. Clear storage bins are a game-changer because you can easily see whatโ€™s inside without having to dig through piles of boxes. Theyโ€™re perfect for seasonal clothes, holiday decorations, sentimental keepsakes, and other items that donโ€™t need to be out all the time but still have a place in your home. Look for stackable bins to maximize storage space and choose ones with secure lids to keep dust, moisture, and pests out. If you want to take it a step further, group similar items together and store them in designated areas so you always know where to find them.

3. Labels and a marker

Even the best storage system wonโ€™t help if you canโ€™t remember where you put things. Thatโ€™s where labels come in. A simple label maker or even just a Sharpie and masking tape can make a world of difference in keeping things organized. Clearly mark bins, shelves, and drawers so you can find what you need at a glance without having to open every single container. This is especially helpful for kidsโ€™ toys, office supplies, and pantry items, where things tend to get jumbled up quickly. The more specific your labels, the betterโ€”think โ€œWinter Coatsโ€ instead of just โ€œClothesโ€ or โ€œCraft Suppliesโ€ instead of just โ€œMiscellaneous.โ€ Trust me, your future self will thank you for taking this extra step!

4. A donation box

Not everything you declutter needs to go in the trash. Many itemsโ€”like clothes that no longer fit, books you wonโ€™t read again, or kitchen gadgets you never useโ€”can still be useful to someone else. Keeping a designated donation box in a convenient spot, like your closet or garage, makes it easy to set things aside as you come across them. Once the box is full, take it to a local charity, thrift store, or donation center. Iโ€™ve found that having a donation box in place helps me make decluttering an ongoing habit rather than a once-a-year event. Instead of letting things pile up, I can drop items in the box as I go, which keeps clutter from creeping back into my home.

5. A “Just in Case” box

We all have those items weโ€™re not quite sure aboutโ€”things we donโ€™t use often but feel hesitant to let go of. Instead of agonizing over every decision, put those items in a โ€œjust in caseโ€ box. Seal it up and set a reminder in your phone for three to six months later. If you havenโ€™t needed anything from the box by then, you can confidently let it go. This method helps prevent regret while also ensuring that youโ€™re only keeping things that truly add value to your life. If youโ€™re someone who struggles with letting go of sentimental items or expensive purchases, a maybe box can be a great way to ease into the decluttering process without feeling overwhelmed.

6. Microfiber cloths and all-purpose cleaner

Decluttering and cleaning go hand in hand. Once youโ€™ve cleared off a shelf or emptied a drawer, youโ€™ll likely find dust, crumbs, or sticky residue left behind. Keeping microfiber cloths and a good all-purpose cleaner nearby makes it easy to wipe down surfaces as you go. Microfiber cloths are especially useful because they trap dust instead of just pushing it around, and they work great with or without cleaning spray. Plus, theyโ€™re reusable and eco-friendly, making them a great alternative to disposable wipes or paper towels. A clean, fresh space always feels more rewarding after a decluttering session, so donโ€™t skip this step!

7. A simple sorting system

One of the biggest decluttering mistakes people make is creating piles with no real plan. Instead of making a mess that youโ€™ll have to clean up later, use a simple three-box system: Keep, Donate, and Trash. As you go through your items, everything should go into one of these categoriesโ€”no exceptions. If youโ€™re dealing with sentimental items, you can add a fourth category for things you want to store, but try to keep it small. Having a clear sorting system prevents decision fatigue and keeps the process moving forward. If you get stuck on an item, remember to ask yourself: Do I use this? Do I love this? Would I buy this again today? If the answer is no, itโ€™s time to let it go.

Decluttering doesnโ€™t have to be overwhelming or complicated. With the right supplies and a simple strategy, you can take control of your space and create a home that feels lighter, more organized, and more peaceful. So grab a trash bag, start labeling, and watch as your home transformsโ€”one decluttered space at a time!
