Some people love organizing things, like my 9-year-old daughter. Others are like me, and they only organize to the extent they absolutely need to. It just so happens that I really hate clutterโand so because of that, and with the help of my wife, weโve settled into a handful of really easy organizing hacks that keep clutter mostly at bay with minimal daily effort. You just have to stay on top of these two-minute habits, and youโre set.
Iโm not talking about deep cleaning marathons or massive weekend decluttering projects. Iโm talking about tiny, almost effortless actions that, when done consistently, make a huge difference. These habits donโt require any fancy storage systems or a ton of motivationโtheyโre just simple ways to keep things from spiraling out of control. If youโre like me and you want a clutter-free home without spending all your free time tidying up, these quick organization hacks will be a game changer.
1. The one-minute rule
One of the simplest ways to keep your home tidy is to follow the one-minute rule: if a task takes less than a minute to complete, do it immediately. This could be hanging up your coat, wiping down the kitchen counter, or putting your shoes away. These tiny actions might not seem like much, but they prevent clutter from accumulating throughout the day. Instead of letting small tasks pile up, this rule helps you stay on top of things effortlessly.
2. Reset a room before you leave
Before you walk out of any room, take a quick glance around and put things back in place. Fluff the pillows, straighten up the coffee table, and pick up anything that doesnโt belong. This habit ensures that every room stays neat without requiring a big clean-up session later. By resetting each space as you go, you maintain a clutter-free home without even thinking about it.
3. Keep a donation bin nearby
One of the biggest causes of clutter is holding onto things we no longer use. To make decluttering effortless, keep a donation bin in your closet, garage, or laundry room. Whenever you come across clothes, kitchen gadgets, or books you donโt need, toss them in the bin. Once itโs full, drop it off at a local donation center. This keeps your home from filling up with unnecessary items and makes decluttering a natural part of your routine.
4. Use a catch-all basket
Small items like keys, mail, and random household objects tend to pile up on tables and countertops. Instead of letting them create clutter, place a decorative basket in high-traffic areas like your entryway or living room. Throughout the day, toss stray items into the basket. Once a day, take two minutes to return everything to its rightful place. This simple trick keeps surfaces clear and prevents your home from looking messy.
5. Set a two-minute timer for a speed clean
If youโre feeling overwhelmed by clutter, grab your phone and set a timer for two minutes. Use that time to tidy up as much as possibleโwhether itโs clearing a countertop, folding a blanket, or straightening up a pile of papers. Youโll be surprised at how much you can accomplish in such a short time. Doing this once or twice a day can keep your home consistently tidy with minimal effort.
6. Declutter one drawer at a time
Instead of tackling an entire room at once, focus on just one small area. Pick a drawerโmaybe in your kitchen, bathroom, or nightstandโand spend two minutes clearing out anything you donโt need. Toss expired products, relocate misplaced items, and organize whatโs left. This bite-sized approach to decluttering makes it easy to maintain an organized home without feeling overwhelmed.
7. Sort mail immediately
Mail has a way of piling up quickly, creating unnecessary clutter. The best way to prevent this is to sort it as soon as you bring it inside. Take two minutes to separate junk mail from important documents. Recycle anything unnecessary, file bills and paperwork where they belong, and set aside anything that requires action. This simple habit keeps paper clutter from taking over your kitchen counters or desk.
8. Adopt the “one in, one out” rule
Every time you bring a new item into your homeโwhether itโs clothing, a kitchen gadget, or a decorative pieceโtake a moment to remove an old item. If you buy a new sweater, donate one you no longer wear. If you get a new mug, get rid of one thatโs chipped or rarely used. This rule prevents clutter from building up over time and ensures that everything you own has a place.
9. Keep cleaning supplies handy
Cleaning is much easier when supplies are within reach. Store basic cleaning products where you use them mostโa small container of wipes in the bathroom, a handheld vacuum near the kitchen, or a dusting cloth in the living room. Having these items easily accessible makes quick clean-ups effortless. Instead of putting off small messes, you can handle them immediately in just a few seconds.
10. Do a nightly reset
Before heading to bed, take two minutes to do a final sweep of your main living areas. Put away stray items, wipe down kitchen counters, and straighten up anything thatโs out of place. Waking up to a tidy home sets a positive tone for the day ahead and prevents clutter from carrying over into the next morning. A quick nightly reset keeps things organized without requiring a major cleaning session.
These small, two-minute habits may seem minor, but when done consistently, they add up to a home that stays organized with minimal effort. Try incorporating a few of these hacks into your daily routine and see how easy it is to maintain a clutter-free space!
